How Oliberté, the anti-TOMS, Makes Shoes and Jobs in Africa

For many - for me obvious - reasons I have never liked the over-hyped TOMS Shoes. I don’t want to get into the issue here, because I think Oliberté deserves better. I just love their concept. Oliberté Footwear is the first to make its premium leather footwear exclusively in Africa. And their shoes looks great too! Setting up a good business does not have to be that difficult. Although I am sure it is not too easy to do what they are pulling off right now. True (social) entrepreneurs don’t choose the easiest way. And don’t use their way of working as the core selling point or just simply for marketing reasons. Props to Oliberté!

FRIDAY CHALLENGE

When I was 20 years old I co-founded El Desafío Foundation to help Argentinean children and their families living in poverty creating a brighter future. Today - 7 years later - the once small initiative keeps growing and growing. El Desafío means THE CHALLENGE, and honestly it has been a challenge. I chose a life full of insecurity, but I never regretted my decision. Coming Monday 28 of November I am going back to Argentina again and I need your help. That’s why I created this Friday Challenge. I want to ask you become a permanent donor/social investor of our foundation by clicking here. But you can get something in return:

Adam Phillips on Greed - Capitalism is for Children

Last week I saw the British psychoanalyst Adam Phillips on Dutch television discussing his book ’On Balance’ and he said some very interesting things so I uploaded that part of the show.

According to Phillips, greed is wanting more than you can have. Nothing new here, but he also says that greed is the attempt to destroy once’s pleasure.

“We are living in an age of excess. There is a huge number of people excessively poor, and there is a smaller large group group of people excessively rich. Phillips asks why the middle-class can waste that much time thinking what they are going to eat, while for many the search for food is the ‘project’. There is no excess.

Everybody who makes a profit knows it’s only possible to make that profit when somebody else’s labor has been exploited. There is no secret about it. It is shocking that those excesses have been accepted.”

We - living inside that system - might think there is no other way, but worse is to even think it is normal.

“Nobody is really giving a serious alternative for capitalism. Politics is entirely about economics. Capitalism exploits something about appetite. Capitalism is for children (13:46). It engages with appetite at the child’s level.”
